"Darkness, Darkness," by Jesse Colin Young, was on the 1969 Youngblood’s album Elephant Mountain. It is a dark song (thereby the name of the tune) in the key of E minor with Eastern Indian overtones that blend softly with the guitars and drums thanks to Richard Scoville’s incredible facility with every known instrument pumped by lungs, most of which Richard plays at one time or another on this tune. Emy Scoville’s clear, beautiful voice gives you just enough light to see inside the “Darkness, Darkness.” Robert Hudson plays an electronic tabla to set the rhythm for the song. The tabla is an Indian percussion instrument popular in Indian classical and popular music. Scott Madry plays a variety of harmonics and uses a time delay and chorus on his guitar to accentuate the mood of the song. It is one of the band’s favorite tunes as we can each stretch out some, and we never quite know exactly where it is going to go.
