Books

Well Worth a Shindy: The Architectural and Philosophical History of the Old Well at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . iUniverse Press, 2004. The book presents extensive research in the UNC Chapel Hill university archives on the commissioning of the Old Well in 1897 by President Edwin Alderman and its restoration by university officials in 1954. Because the Old Well is an exemplar of eighteenth-century garden structures, descended from ancient temples, I included a description of their descent through western European history, as well as a catalogue of similar structures in Europe and the United States. No other study of the Old Well exists.

President Emeritus of the University of North Carolina, William Friday, wrote the foreword for Well Worth A Shindy.

Business Affiliations

In 2003 I created Arts on the Hill, a consulting business specializing in graphics, editorial services, and relational database design. I am also Vice President of Informatics International, Inc., a diversified corporation, which provides GIS, GPS, and satellite remote sensing consulting and teaching. I manage the graphic design and business administration of the company. My husband, Scott L.H. Madry, President and CEO, is also Research Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at UNC Chapel Hill.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Endowments

My family gave the Paul and Melba Brandes Course Development Award to the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1990. In memory of my parents, Paul (former speech professor in the Department of English), and Melba, the fund awards small grants to professors who wish to create new, innovative courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. Both my parents being deceased, my husband and I are the current stewards of this fund.

My husband and I established a fund to pay for the restoration of the full-length portrait of UNC President Edward Kidder Graham (1876 - 1918) for the first UNC student center, Graham Memorial. Our donation was joined by gifts from Edward Kidder Graham's grandchildren.

My husband and I have also donated various gifts to these UNC-CH departments and funds: The Carolina Family Scholarship, the Graduate School, the School of Education, the Memorial Hall Renovation, the Division of Geriatric Medicine, and the College of Arts and Sciences.
